World War Two

Leading Aircraftman Jack Creswell

Jack Cresswell was born around 1921 and was the son of George and Priscilla Cresswell.  The family lived at Girton Terrace, Prince Street, Sudbury.  He had an older brother who served in the Royal Air Force overseas during the war and a sister.  Jack went to North Street School and was a member of St. Gregory’s Church choir.  He was also a keen footballer and played at one time for Sudbury Hotspur.  

Jack was employed by Marten & Son in their printing business.  He enlisted in 1941 and served as an armourer at a Royal Air Force Station in Yorkshire.  At the time of his death Jack was engaged to be married.

Jack died in Yorkshire aged 22 on 15th February 1943.  The funeral service was held at St. Gregory’s Church conducted by Canon John Frederick Hughes, whose son also served and lost his life with the Royal Air Force.  Jack lies buried in Sudbury Cemetery.
