In May 1927 Sudbury celebrated the bi-centenary of Gainsborough’s birth and the President of the Royal Academy of Arts, Sir Frank Dicksee, laid a wreath at his feet as part of the week-long celebrations. Maypole dancing, a military band concert and community singing and dancing on the Market Hill drew the crowds. In true celebration mood a peal was rung on the newly-restored bells of St Peter’s Church.
