J.S.'Charlie' May.  In March 1916 when he was a sergeant in the London Rifles and billeted at Orford House, 22 Melford Road, the house was hit by an incendiary bomb dropped by the German Zeppelin L14. He entered the burning house and rescued a fellow soldier from the flames, receiving the Military Medal in recognition of his bravery. He was subsequently promoted to Second Lieutenant in 1917 -the photograph probably dates from  his later service in the Home Guard in WWII. (See also picture 266)
