An auction in progress at the Corn Exchange. The auctioneeer at the rostrum is Roland Coote Oliver; the porter in the foreground is believed to be Mr George Coote who was head porter for Boardman and Oliver for some 40 years. This is one of a series of photographs taken by Humphrey Spender in and around the market place in 1934. He was a noted pioneer in the field of photo journalism.
