This was taken at Fennell Brothers' (later Vanners & Fennell Ltd.) Girling Street factory. It shows umbrella silk – the firm’s speciality – being ‘scrapped’, that is, any small holes in the fabric closed over with a pin by moving the threads together slightly. This must have required great concentration and placed a strain on the eyesight. c1900.
