Private Peter Welsh

276099 12th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

Peter Welsh was born around 1887 in Howick, Ayrshire, Scotland. By 1911 he was a regular soldier serving with 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers at West Ridge, Rawalpindi in India.

Peter married Florence Mumford in Sudbury in 1917 and they lived at 1 Siam Terrace. Peter enlisted in Kilsyth, Scotland to serve with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (formerly 3646). The battalion formed part of 77th Brigade, 26th Division. The Division was sent to France in September 1915 but in November was diverted to Salonika.

The Salonika Campaign began in October 1915, the Allies hoped to deter Bulgaria from joining Germany and Austria-Hungary, but only days later Bulgaria declared war. Attempts by the Anglo-French force to support the Serbian army failed and by 14 December the troops were back on Greek territory and retreating towards Salonika. The soldiers on both sides faced each other for three years across challenging terrain, through extremes of climate in summer and winter.

In 1918 the Division saw action at the Battle of Doiran (18 - 19 September). Peter died of wounds on 20 September 1918 and lies buried in Sarigol Military Cemetery, Kriston, Greece.

A Cross of Remembrance was laid by his grave on my behalf in August 2014. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Peter is also remembered on the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle.
