Sapper Fred Watton

Frederick Watton, known as Fred was born in Sudbury around 1893, the eldest of six surviving children of William George and Susannah Watton (née Beer). His father was a mechanic at a local silk factory and the family lived at 4 Oxford Terrace, Queens Road. At the age of 17 Fred was employed as a carpenter’s apprentice.

The family believe that Fred married widow Ellen Winifred Beer (née Crisswell) around 1915/16. Ellen was a well-known local amateur artist and was the widow of Frederick Arthur Beer who died of dysentery in Palestine in September 1915 and who is also remembered on the Sudbury War Memorial. Fred had a stepdaughter Joyce from his wife’s first marriage.

Neither I nor the family have been able to trace any further details on what happened to Fred at the present time.

Fred Watton is remembered on the Sudbury War Memorial and on the Trinity Congregational Church Memorial which was moved to the United Reformed Church, School Street when Trinity closed. The United Reformed Church closed in 2017 and it is proposed that the memorials from both churches will be relocated to the Sudbury Cemetery Chapel.
