Private Percy Herbert Partridge

18922 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment

Percy Partridge was born in Bulmer, Essex around 1894 and was one of seven surviving children of Alfred John and Eliza Partridge. His father was employed as a horseman, his mother was a silk weaver and the family lived at No. 41 Ballingdon Street in Sudbury.

Percy married Rose Mumford in 1915, before he enlisted he was employed as a brickmaker’s labourer and the family lived in Queens Road.

Percy’s battalion formed part of 76th Brigade, 3rd Division and in the summer of 1916 the battalion saw action in the opening phases of the Battle of the Somme (1 July – 18 November) at the battles of Albert (1 – 13 July), Bazentin (14 – 17 July) and Delville Wood (15 Jul – 3 September). Percy served alongside other Sudbury men including Charles Goody, Alec Farrance, George Parker and Gilbert Smith who would also lose their lives on the Somme in 1916.

A notice was placed in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press on 30 August 1916 ‘Mrs. Partridge of Queens Road, Sudbury has received information that her husband, Pte. Percy Partridge of the 2nd Suffolks is missing. She would gladly receive information respecting him.’

Percy’s body was never found; he killed in action on 16 August 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Percy was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

A Cross of Remembrance was laid at the Thiepval Memorial in April 2006 and April 2009.
