Private James Frederick Austin Parish

241189 5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment

James Parish was born in Sudbury around 1898 and was the eldest and only son of six known surviving children of James and Bertha Parish. The family lived at No. 33 Gainsborough Street before later moving to No.5. His father was a sweet maker and shopkeeper and his mother assisted in the family business. At the age of 13 James was employed as an apprentice with a local printer.

James enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds, and served with the Suffolk Regiment (formerly 3685). It is not known when James joined his battalion but in 1917 he would have served alongside other Sudbury men including CSM John French, William Bunn, Frank Harrison, Frank Hopes, Frederick Keeble and Stanley Nunn

In March 1917 the battalion was moved into Palestine and took part in the second attack at Gaza on 19 April and the third attack at Gaza and Beersheba on 28 October. It is possible that James was injured at Beersheba and was evacuated back to England.

James died of wounds received in Palestine at the King George Hospital in Lambeth on 25 December 1917 aged 19. He was buried in Sudbury Cemetery on 1 January 1918 and lies in Plot QQ 42.

James was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
