Private James William Moulton

40967 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment

James Moulton was born in Sudbury in 1890, the eldest son of James and Lavinia Moulton (née Eaves). James like his father was self employed as a general dealer and the family of nine lived in Acton Square, before moving to Church Street. In 1907 James married Mabel Florence Baker and they lived with their son James at 19 Friars Street.

James enlisted in Sudbury and served with the Suffolk Regiment (formerly 4510).
The battalion formed part of 35th Brigade, 12th (Eastern) Division. In July 1917 the battalion was in the Monchy sector around Arras where the chief activity was raiding enemy trenches. James served alongside the Sudbury schoolmaster Herbert Couch, who lost his life at this time.

On 9 August 1917 350 men of the 7th Battalion took part in a trench raid. At 7.45am patrols and raiders moved forward under a creeping barrage heading towards Bois du Vert and The Mound. The operation was a success with 69 German prisoners captured along with two enemy machine guns, valuable information was obtained and damage inflicted but the battalion suffered heavy casualties one of which was James.

James was killed in action age 27 on 9 August 1917. There is no known grave and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

James was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. A Cross of Remembrance was laid at the Arras Memorial in March 2007 and October 2011.
