Sapper Frederick Arthur Beer

Frederick Beer was born in 1894. He was married to Ellen Winifred Crisswell on 28th December 1914, and they had one daughter. Frederick served as an apprentice joiner with George Grimwood & Sons and had been employed with them for six years when he enlisted on 1 January 1915. His army service record states that when he enlisted he was living at 4 Oxford Terrace, Queens Road, Sudbury. He was 5ft 6 ins in height, with a full chest measurement of 35 ins and a good physical development. He was posted to the 72nd Field Company on 11 January 1915.

Frederick embarked for service overseas on 15 June 1915 arriving in Egypt on 30th June 1915 for the Balkans. His company formed part of 13 (Western) Division which landed in Gallipoli at Anzac in July in preparation for the August offensive. It is believed that 6% of the casualties during the Gallipoli campaign died from disease and illness such as dysentery and typhoid.

Frederick died of dysentery aged 21 on 14 September 1915 and lies buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

His widow Ellen moved to 58 Melford Road and married Fred Watton, who also lost his life serving with the Royal Engineers and who is remembered on the Sudbury War Memorial.
