Private Stanley Phillip Ager

TF/5943 ‘C’ Company 1st/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment

Stanley Ager was born in Sudbury in 1893, the eldest of four children of Herbert and Louisa Ager. His father was a journeyman butcher and the family lived at 14 Newman’s Road, Sudbury. At the age of 17 Stanley was employed as a ‘bottle washer’ for a local brewery.

Stanley enlisted with the Middlesex Regiment, the 1st/8th was a Territorial Battalion, which formed part of 167th Brigade, 56th (London) Division. The battalion saw action in several battles during the Battle of the Somme including the Battle of Le Transloy (1–18 October 1916) the final phase of the Battle of the Somme.

Stanley died aged 23 on 8 October 1916. There is no known grave and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Stanley was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

A Cross of Remembrance was laid close to his name at the Thiepval Memorial in April 2006 and April 2009.
